Illustration
The pixel art illustration presented on this page was meant to be used as a splash page for the website of a group of Dutch people, called Internet Creatieven.
The size of the original illustration is 1600 x 1040 pixels; 1.664.000 pixels. The illustration is drawn in MS Paint with just three 'colors': light gray, dark gray and black. It took me around 560 hours to create, over a period of approximately one and a half years.
Around 170 steps are saved during the creation process, in order to generate an interactive animation.
Click on the illustration to see the interactive animation with the pixel
art illustration at it's original size.
Once the Adobe Flash animation is loaded, click and drag inside the
illustration to see all the steps involved.
Click on the details to see small progress animations.
Background information about the details can be found on this page. Click 'more...' - or use the navigation on the left side - to access more detailed background information and additional sketches and artwork.
In the must-see documentary, stylewars, a graffiti artist proclaims that everyone has his own perfect arrow... I have my own perfect arrow as well.
I've asked some people if they recognize it... most of them - read no one - didn't...
After some thought, I changed it into a real eighteenth century Man-of-War ship because the jellyfish was too vague.
I combined the shape with the arms of an octopus to give it a little bit more tension.

After finishing the rainbow, I wondered if it was scientifically possible to have a rainbow at this spot; this proved to be true, although in reality the spectrum range could differ.

Although I am not an Apple fan, I used the Mac as a reference because it had a nice look.
See 'Deleted Artwork' for a bigger version of the keyboard, which I didn't use.
On the brink of extinction, I luckily caught one in action.

My insurance agent thought it was a hand grenade...
The initials refer to Annedien Hoen, the founder of Internet Creatieven.
I didn't use the initial sketch for this part of the illustration.
The top of the lighthouse was one of the last parts I drew, because I had no clear idea of what it would look like.
In this case slightly adjusted to look like my nameless puppet with crossed arms.
If you take a very close look, you may discover the tree-rings.

The apocalyptic atmosphere of the illustration gave me the idea of adding a snake, symbol of evil.

I wonder why there's no message in the bottle...
Rumors have it that pilots discovered that the island has the shape of the Internet Creatieven wooden shoe logo, when viewed from a plane...
